Pilates History

Learn more about Joseph Pilates

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). Born in Germany Joseph was a sickly child who suffered from rheumatic fever, asthma and rickets. Over the next 50 years he worked at regaining his health by developing an exercise system he called ‘Contrology’, or the study of control. The movements were geared toward emphasizing your body’s core – the abdomen, obliques, lower back, inner and outer thigh, butt, and so on.

For this reason, Pilates develops much of what exercisers need – strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture – with a much lower chance of injury than with other forms of exercise. The discipline emphasizes correct form instead of many repetitions exhausting the muscles and losing form. With so many exercise variations and progressions, you will have a hard time getting bored with Pilates.

Utilizing Pilates techniques to develop a strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture.

Zoeli’s youth fitness program is designed to help young athletes build a strong foundation that can greatly enhance their physical development and overall well-being. This program typically focuses on improving strength, flexibility, agility, and endurance, all of which are crucial for young athletes to excel in their respective sports. By incorporating Pilates and functional movement techniques, you can help young athletes develop a strong core, better posture, and enhanced body awareness, which can reduce the risk of injuries.

Moreover, a well-structured youth fitness program can also instill important life skills like discipline, teamwork, and goal setting, fostering not only physical growth but also personal development in the young athletes who participate. Christa Carpani

”Eight years ago, my doctor recommended Pilates to help with my scoliosis. When I became a client at Zoeli I felt a significant difference in my body. So much that I enrolled in the teacher training program . The training at Zoeli goes beyond the surface level of the exercise but gives you an understanding of the biomechanics of movement and its purpose. I now have the knowledge of Classical Pilates and how it transforms your body and mind.”

Kerensa Carpani

”During my home search I asked about Pilates studios and Zoeli Pilates was recommended. I learned that Zoeli is a USPA training center, the owner, Amanda Marley, is a Supervising Instructor for the USPA and 3rd generation teacher, and David Freeman, a Principal Director of the USPA and 2nd generation teacher, bases himself out of the Zoeli studio. All of this had great appeal - an opportunity to learn from experience like this doesn't come around every day. I spoke with each of them and with an apprentice of the program and their encouragement and enthusiasm were contagious, both for the training program and for Classical Pilates as a whole. After further thought and research into my other options I couldn't shake what felt right - to join the USPA and dive into the world of Classical Pilates. It was the best decision I've made, both personally and professionally.”

“As a professional football player I am constantly twisting and torquing my body. Pilates at Zoeli has been an excellent conditioning tool in this respect because it has greatly increased my agility and strength. It also allows me to work out small muscle groups that I normally don't.”
